Gymkhana Sprint/Formula G Demonstration Presented by SuperPro
We are always looking to introduce different forms of motorsport and activity relating to tuning and performance at Tunerfest. Therefore, for the first time ever this weekend, we are delighted to introduce the increasingly popular sport of Gymkhana – or Formula G as it is now often referred to.
Described as an Autotest on steroids, the sport has been made well know Motorsport event by the likes of Ken Block. It combines a mix of precision driving, Drifting and Rallycross, with drivers going head to head around a series of obstacles, such as cones, tyres and barrels. The drivers manoeuvre through a predetermined course using a range of different driving techniques whilst competing against the clock.
Today’s demonstration will take place on the start/finish straight and is presented by SuperPro, the manufacturer of high-performance polyurethane bushes and suspension parts. Both cars are equipped with SuperPro components that improve the function of the cars’ suspension and provide better feedback for the drivers – a highly important factor in Gymkhana competition.
Two drivers will be showing you how it’s done today:
Jake Archer is well known as a pioneer of Gymkhana. His five years in competition has seen him in the top three of the sport consistently, the highlight coming in 2014 contesting the final in Madrid, when he finished second to Ken Block by just one second. His Subaru STI is the newest car on the grid and is the first dedicated, ground-up Gymkhana-specific car ever built.
Mike Newland is driving his 400bhp Nissan S13 180SX, built by JAPS Motorsport. Mike finished 2nd in the driver’s championship last year and is currently tied for 1st place in the RWD Class. Previous to his Gymkhana competition, he competed in Karting and Rallying.
